The Trainer
DAVID SIMCOCK’s career has really gathered pace in the last couple of years and he will start the 2012 season as one of British racing’s most upwardly mobile trainers.
Simcock,39, had his best season to date in 2011 with total prizemoney at home and abroad totalling over £1million. Dream Ahead proved to be a real flag-bearer for the Trillium Place team securing the honour of leading sprinter in Europe. He recorded Group 1 wins in Europe’s premier sprint, the July Cup, as well as the Haydock Sprint Cup and when beating Goldikova in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Arc Day.
These, combined with his two Group 1s successes as a juvenile in the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes, established Dream Ahead as one of the best sprinters in Britain for many years. Dream Ahead’s exploits helped David break into the top 15 in the British Flat Trainers Championship for the first time.
Newmarket has been a happy hunting ground for Simcock and its Rowley Mile racecourse had previously been the scene of another great day for the Trillium Place team when Darley Sun won the Cesarewitch on Champions’ Day 2009. Simcock’s charge justified favouritism that day with an emphatic win in one of the sport’s most renowned and valuable handicaps.
Simcock began his career as pupil assistant to Ian Balding and then moved to Lambourn where he enjoyed a stint in the employment of the legendary Major Dick Hern. Simcock completed his learning curve with a spell as assistant trainer to Luca Cumani in Newmarket, coming into contact with stars such as Falbrav and Gossamer.
David and his wife Jennie set up on their own in 2004 with just 10 horses but since then the duo have gone from strength-to-strength. David’s professionalism and ability soon got him noticed and his string swelled to approaching 100 in 2011.
These are exciting times for all at Trillium Place and everything is in place for the forward momentum to continue through 2012 and beyond
