Breton is 'champion' at Ascot

BRETON Rock came with a late surge under Lewis Walsh to win the Future Stakes Apprentice Stakes at Ascot's Champion's Day on Saturday.

Walsh gave his mount a patient ride, settling him towards the rear of the far side group.
He gradually made progress before staying on strongly to take the lead with 100yards to go. The runner-up, Intrigo, didn't go down without a fight, but Breton Rock was well on top at the line, winning by a length.
On the near side, stable mate Gramercy ran a cracking race to be third at odds of 50/1. The six-year-old hit the front some way out under Shelley Birkett and stayed on gamely to retain third position.
David said: "It's a very special day to have a winner. More pleasing for me is that the winner is owned by John Cook, my very first owner when I started training and he's had a horse with me every year since."
