Breton Rock lands Group 2 spoils

16 August 2014

BRETON Rock landed the biggest prize of his career when taking the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury this afternoon.

The son of Bahamian Bounty has enjoyed a short break since finishing second in the Jury Stakes in May and with his favoured soft ground, he produced a career best under Martin Lane.

The small field were taken along an even pace by Richard Hughes aboard Professor. Breton Rock settled well and moved fluently in behind.

Gregorian took over at the furlong pole but Breton Rock was just getting into full stride and loomed up to join his rival entered the closing stages.

The pair were neck and neck but Breton Rock stuck gamely to his task and had his head in front where it mattered. They flashed past the post together but Breton Rock was the clear winner by a short head.

David said: "He probably deserved that after Haydock - I thought he should have won there. This race cut up nicely and he had his conditions. We will have a look at the Foret later on.”

Martin added: “He has great heart and he really tries and that is his major attribute. The softer the better for him. He has his head down and he is as game a horse as you like.”
