Sheikhzayedroad returns to Royal Ascot

19 June 2018

SHEIKHZAYEDROAD will line up at Royal Ascot for the fifth time on Thursday when he contests the Ascot Gold Cup.

The Trillium Place stable stalwart, now nine, first raced at the renowned meeting back in 2013, finishing second in the Wolferton Stakes.

He has since finished fourth in the Hardwicke Stakes (2015), third in the Gold Cup (2016) and sixth in the same race a year ago.

The Dubawi gelding comes into his latest assignment after finishing sixth of six in the Henry II Stakes at Sandown.

But prior to that this season he had run well at the Dubai World Cup Carnival where he was third and second in two starts at Meydan.

Trainer David Simcock said: “He is still very capable. Whether he is up to beating the likes of Order Of St George and Stradivarius I very much doubt. But he’s more than capable of running a really nice race.”

Sheikhzayedroad will once again be partnered by jockey Martin Harley. Nine runners will contest the two-and-a-half mile Group 1.

David will also saddle Lady Of Shalott at Royal Ascot on Thursday. She will tackle the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes, staged over a mile and a half.
